Conocí a Francis y a Enric hace aproximadamente 30 años.

Promo sheet included on the record back cover:

I first met Francis and Enric some thirty years ago. Two determined twentysomethings, they had just arrived in Madrid for the weekend riding Francis’s old BMW R65, carrying a backpack and 20 copies of their new demo with the aim of procuring some gigs and getting a recording contract. Later on I was told that, while their visit had been a social success, they went back home with 19 copies still filling the backpack. First things first.

If you already know The Meows, let’s just say that this compilation includes demos recorded before their first album for No Tomorrow Records, half of them even prior to their 7” debut for the Goo label.

If you don’t know the band, their story differs little from those of other “underground” groups active for a number of years, so in a few words: in the early nineties, Francis was the singer of the Revved-Up Bulls, a punk rock combo, while Enric played bass in The Marmotes, a garage band. These two groups met during a small joint tour, and our two heroes eventually decided to form a cover band just for fun. Two decades and seven lineups later, they parted ways.

A twenty-year long “career” is quite a long one, and while the band’s sound showed precisely ZERO evolution, the stylistical changes were considerable. With the passing of the years, The Meows widened their musical horizon and went from playing “fast músic” (listen to the last track on this album, from the group’s second concert ever) to a mishmash of influences from the best R&R form the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.

I was lucky enough to see them perform live half a dozen times during their early days… Their shows were always very brief, they played loooooud and believe me, they were TIGHT. They may have looked like a bunch of Blue Cheer roadies, but The Meows were a classy act.

This album features previously unreleased material: different recordings by two of The Meows’ earlier lineups, with no songs from the longest-standing one, which waxed three of the band’s four albums. They are mostly demos, made in studios owned by friends, with a few four-track recordings made by themselves. There are also a couple of live numbers (maybe three), a detail which is not mentioned in the title of this album, with the possible aim of not interfering with its sales.
